Additionally, Markell has led efforts to make better use of state corrections resources and increase the likelihood that ex-offenders will contribute to society rather than reoffend. Markell has been recognized by his fellow governors, having been elected to serve as chair of both the Democratic Governors Association and the National Governors Association. Prior to being elected governor, Markell was elected three times as Delaware’s state treasurer.

From 2000 to 2002, he was the French ambassador to the United Nations, and from 2003 to 2007, he served as ambassador to the United States. Levitte earned a law degree from Sciences-Po (Paris) and is a graduate of the National School of Oriental Languages, where he studied Chinese and Indonesian.
Previously, he spent over a decade as a senior analyst and research manager specializing in strategic studies at RAND. From 1994-95, he was a member of the secretary’s policy planning staff at the U.S. Department of State, responsible for Turkey, Southern Europe, North Africa, and the multilateral track of the Middle East peace process.
