How Sustainable Energy can drive Prosperity?
Marrakech , Morocco
The COP21 has put a great emphasis on the need for mitigation and foremost adaptation to climate change. Next to the political commitment of all countries to reduce carbon emissions, an aspect may have been neglected: the role of energy for prosperity. All countries, among which developing and emerging countries, are engaged in implementing the production and use of sustainable energy. Empirical research suggests that energy is a crucial input for economic prosperity, making the transition to low-carbon energy in developing countries a crucial issue.
This session will bring together experts to discuss the following questions: What would be the drivers and conditions to maximize prosperity while minimizing the production and use of coal and oil? What will be the consequences of such a constraint? Under which conditions can a decoupling between fossil energy and GDP growth take place? What consequences would be induced by a delay in the implementation of this energy shift?
The aim is to inform the stakeholders of the consequences of the energy transition and of the various approaches and tools available to understand the role of energy in transforming the growth models of developing countries.
