Having studied at the Universities of Oslo and Vienna, she specializes in comparative and international education. Her research interests include African Americans in higher education, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and teacher education. She is the author or editor of five books and currently serves on the German Marshall Fund (GMF) Board of Trustees, among others. She was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities for two terms.
