The Malabo Montpellier Forum Water-wise: Smart Irrigation Strategies for Africa

By invitation

A platform for policy innovation
through exchange and mutual learning among leaders on agricultural growth and food security

The Malabo Montpellier Forum provides a platform for informed dialogue and exchange among African policy makers at the highest level on agriculture, nutrition and food security. It is co-chaired by The Right Honorable Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, Vice President of the Republic of Malawi and His Excellency Abdoulaye Bio-Tchané, Minister of Planning and Development, Republic of Benin. The Forum gathers representatives at the ministerial level from several African countries, senior executives of leading global development agencies and members of the Malabo Montpellier Panel.

The Malabo Montpellier Forum meets several times a year to review progress among African countries and related success factors in dealing with issues of strategic importance for attainment of the goals under the African Union Agenda 2063 and in particular the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme. Every session gathers countries that have made the most progress in a given strategic area to share their experience with other countries for the purpose of mutual learning and spreading of best practices.

The third Malabo Montpellier Forum is co-organized with OCP Policy Center and will be held in Rabat, Morocco on December 17, 2018 at OCP Policy Center headquarters to discuss successes and lessons in advancing irrigation in African agriculture in the context of a changing climate.

The Forum is supported by a technical report prepared by the Malabo Montpellier Panel of experts – Water-wise: Smart Irrigation Strategies for Africa, which will be launched at the Forum.

About The Malabo Montpellier Panel:

The Malabo Montpellier Panel convenes 17 leading experts in agriculture, ecology, nutrition and food security to guide policy choices by African governments to accelerate progress towards food security and improved nutrition in Africa. The Panel identifies areas of progress and positive change across the continent and assesses what successful countries have done differently. It then identifies the most important institutional innovations and policy and program interventions that can be replicated and scaled up by other countries.

The related Malabo Montpellier Forum provides a platform to promote policy innovation by using the evidence produced by the Panel to facilitate dialogue and exchange among high-level decision-makers on African agriculture, nutrition and food security.

About the OCP Policy Center:

The OCP Policy Center is a Moroccan policy-oriented think tank based in Rabat, Morocco, striving to promote knowledge sharing and to contribute to an enriched reflection on key economic and international relations issues.
