Chinchilla Miranda

While in that role, she also served as president of the National Immigration Board and the National Drug Council. From 2002 to 2006, she was an elected member of the National Congress, chairing the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Committee on Narcotics. In 2006, she was elected vice president of the republic, taking office at the Ministry of Justice at the same time. She has also worked as a consultant in Latin America and Africa with international organizations in institutional reform.

Laura Chinchilla Miranda is a political scientist and graduate of Georgetown University. She was elected president of the Republic of Costa Rica on February 7, 2010, that nation’s first female president. Her election was preceded by a successful career in the public sector, beginning with her appointment as minister of public security from 1996 to 1998.
