He was professor of Sociology (ret.) at the University of Rio de Janeiro, visiting professor and chair at many European, North American and Latin American universities. Author of 30 books and more than 100 academic articles on international relations, the social impact of new technologies and Latin America political development, he is a member of the board of several academic journals and consultant to governments and international organizations. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Manchester (UK).
