Politics and Security in Turbulent Times

OCP Policy Center is hosting Sir John Sawers, Chairman and Partner of Macro Advisory Partners and former Chief of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI-6), on June 13th, 2017 within its Rabat offices.

On this occasion, a seminar on “Politics and Security in Turbulent Times” will take place in which Sir Sawers will give his remarks on the subject matter, followed by a debate.

Sir John will lead a discussion that looks at geo-political trends and how they challenge the current world order.  As part of this Sir John will look at how the rise of China, the volatility in Western Politics, and the challenges in the Middle East and North Africa interact with one another to create a more turbulent world. During the talk Sir John will call on his experience as Chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, and Britain’s Ambassador to Cairo.

    Chairman and Partner, Macro Advisory Partners

    Sir John joined the firm in 2015 after completing his five-year tenure as Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). As Chief of MI6 he modernised the way the Service works and created a more open approach to public accountability, as well as leading the organisation through a period of high terrorist threat and international political upheaval.

    Prior to leading MI6, Sir John was the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations (2007-2009), Political Director of the Foreign Office (2003-2007), Special Representative in Iraq (2003), Ambassador to Cairo (2001-2003), and Foreign Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Tony Blair (1999-2001).

    Sir John studied at the universities of Nottingham, St Andrews, Witwatersrand and Harvard. He is a Non-Executive Director of BP, a Visiting Professor at King’s College London, a Senior Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute, and a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation.
