World Water Week : A Water-Energy-Food Nexus Platform for Achieving the Water, Energy and Food SDGs

Held from 28 August – 2 September, 2016 in Stockholm, World Water Week is  a leading annual global event for addressing the planet’s water issues and related concerns of international development that is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute. The theme for this year’s edition is « Water for Sustainable Growth », which falls within the lines of SIWI’s vision of a water wise world: « A world where water is shared and allocated sustainably, equitably and efficiently, to meet everyone’s basic needs. »

This event serves as a network to exchange ideas and develop new solutions to current water-related challenges between experts, practitioners, decision-makers, business innovators and young professionals from a wide range of sectors and countries.

In the same spirit, Texas A&M University, DHI and OCP Policy Center co-organize an event during the World Water Week on ‘A Water-Energy-Food Nexus Platform for Achieving the Water, Energy and Food SDGs’ on Sunday 28 August from 16 :00 to 17 :30.

This event will focus on how implementation of the water goal (SDG 6) impacts and is impacted by the food and energy goals. Event organizers will conduct a preliminary analysis of the interaction of the six targets of goal 6 with the targets of goals 2 and 7 for selected state and sub-state levels. This analysis will then be presented for discussion, together with a proposal for an integrated SDGs implementation platform that addresses both the disciplinary and the multidisciplinary issues surrounding the SDGs.

The analysis will be conducted using a combination of existing Water – Energy – Food Nexus tools including tools such as WEAP/LEAP, Markal/Times, CLEWs, MuSIASEM, WEF Nexus Tool 2.0, FAO tool, IMPACT, and the Global Calculator tool. A white paper will be developed and presented during the event.

Moving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the implementation phase requires extensive effort using holistic, multidisciplinary approaches for which the water – energy – food Nexus thinking can be a useful platform. While it is important that we work toward achieving all 17 goals agreed to by the international community, it is equally important that we understand their level of interconnectedness and the potential competition between them.  For example, during the implementation phase, how do we achieve the water goal without sacrificing food security goal, given that food security is inherently dependent upon the availability of water? It is also expected that this post 2015 agenda and its implementation will have implications for how the nexus platform evolves and is used for holistically assessing the implementation and monitoring protocols for the SDGs. These approaches need to be complementary to the SDGs and must facilitate science-based decision making, monitoring, assessment and cooperation.

About the World Water Week

The World Water has been the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues since 1991. Each year the Week addresses a particular theme to enable a deeper examination of a specific water-related topic. While not all events during the week relate to the overall theme, the workshops driven by the Scientific Programme Committee and many seminars and side events focus on various aspects of the theme.

About Texas A&M

Texas A&M is the state's first public institution of higher education. With a student body of more than 59,000 and more than 5,200 acres on the College Station campus, Texas A&M is also among the nation's largest universities. Our origins, however, are much humbler: we owe our existence to the Morrill Act, approved by the United States Congress on July 2, 1862. This act provided for donation of public land to the states for the purpose of funding higher education whose "leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and mechanic arts."
