Can Capitalism Survive the Corona Crisis?

Webinar

Karim El Aynaoui, President of the Policy Center for the New South will intervene in the annual Brussels Forum organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) in a high level session under the theme « Can Capitalism Survive the Corona Crisis? »

The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic is unprecedented. Across the globe, many of the world’s largest economies have come to a screeching halt and closed all “non-essential” business as governments try to slow the spread of the deadly disease. In the United States alone, more than 30 million people filed unemployment claims in March and April, and the federal government issued more than two trillion dollars in economic bailout and relief. In Europe, the economic toll has been just as bad. The Eurozone economy suffered its steepest decline in business activity since the Second World War, and the European Central Bank predicted the European economy could shrink as much as 15 percent on the year. At the same time, many that have been hit by the economic crisis are questioning whether our capitalist societies can address the challenges ahead. They argue that a system that leaves millions of workers so vulnerable to increased inequalities due to job loss, economic hardship, and in some cases even poses a threat to their physical health, is both inefficient and immoral. In this virtual session, experts from both sides of the Atlantic will examine the merits of capitalism as a system and discuss what the global economy will look like post-coronavirus.

The webinar will take place on June 22, 16:30-17:30 CET / 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. EDT, 03:30 p.m Morocco time.
